💡 Pro tip
In California you must give a cyclist at least three feet of clearance when passing (CVC 21760) — if the oncoming lane isn't clear enough to do that, slow down and wait behind rather than squeezing by.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Passing a cyclist with less than three feet of space.
- Squeezing by instead of waiting for room to pass safely.
- Cutting back in too soon and clipping the bike.
