Use the whole on-ramp to reach freeway speed before you move over — merging slow forces everyone behind you to brake. Move while the lane line is still dashed; once it goes solid, the merge area has ended and you've missed it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping or crawling on the on-ramp instead of accelerating to match traffic.
- Forcing your way in instead of waiting for a real gap.
- Crossing the solid line to merge — once it's solid, the on-ramp merge area is over.
